Language Goals for January 2017

December Progress

Spanish (for me)

  • I continued watching the Celia Cruz series.  The entire series is 70 episodes and completely addictive!  I will probably finish up watching it next month.  The actors change mid-way through as the characters get older, so I am trying to get used to the shift.  The older actor for one of the characters now has a very exaggerated Mexican accent, which I find hilarious.  I remember when I couldn’t even recognize differences in Spanish accents, so I can appreciate how far I’ve come.
  • I completed the course  El poder del hábito to help with my goal setting for 2017

  • I hosted a holiday party for the Spanish meet-up group.  I had a great time with old and new friends, and enjoyed some fun conversations

Spanish (for the little person)

  • Finished module 1 of the after-school Spanish class
  • Listened to Spanish music CD in the mornings during commute to school
  • Continued Latin American conversational Spanish track in the Mango app on average of 1 – 2 times per week

I didn’t make much progress with Portuguese in December.  I listened to more episodes of the Survival Phrases track of Portuguese Pod 101 and reviewed some phrases I’ve learned.

Goals for January 2017

Spanish (for me)

Goal: Maintain my Spanish level through consistent exposure and use in daily life.

Spanish (for the little person)

Goal: 30-minutes of daily exposure to Spanish

  • Listen to and repeat Spanish phrases for children .mp3 file on the way to school in the mornings
  • Continue 5-minute sessions Latin American conversational Spanish track in the Mango Languages app (2- 3 times per week)
  • Schedule a Spanish play date

Big news for 2017!  I decided this year I will go to Brazil, and I am now fully dedicating myself to learning Portuguese!

Goal: Master basic phrases to be able to introduce myself to a new person in Portuguese

  • Complete the Beginner 1A and first half of Beginner 1B Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese lessons (target: 1-2 lessons per day)
  • Listen to the Tá Falado! podcast for Spanish speakers learning Portuguese once a week
  • Listen to all episodes of the survival phrases and beginner seasons of Portuguese Pod 101.
  • Read the introduction to the Dirty Portuguese book that I received as a door prize at the Polyglot Conference in NYC in October 2015.  I’ve been carrying it around in my purse so time to dust it off and start reading it!
  • Review flashcards on Mosalingua app daily for 5 minutes
  • Attend the World Languages Café for conversational practice
